East Carolina University - PhD Biology Education Researcher for The Vance-Chalcraft Lab

The Vance-Chalcraft Lab at East Carolina University is recruiting a PhD. A student interested in biology education research. The ideal start date would be January 2026, but a later start date will be considered (up to August 2026).

The student will be associated with a multi-institutional study of the learning outcomes resulting from undergraduate courses incorporating participatory science (i.e., citizen science) projects. The Vance-Chalcraft lab also pursues questions such as:

  1. Does the inclusion of training in teamwork enhance student connectedness and team competencies in course-based undergraduate research experiences?
     
  2. How does involvement in community science enhance social capital and build capacity in communities for environmental problem-solving?  

Our lab uses a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. We are looking for a highly motivated student, curious about the world around them, and interested in maximizing the benefits of science for all people. Prior experience in biology education research is preferred, but research experience in any biological field will be considered.
