Interventional Cardiology Internship

Location: On-site — 4040 Coon Rapids Blvd, Suite 120 (Research Department), Coon Rapids, MN 55433

Department: Metropolitan Heart & Vascular Institute (MHVI) – Clinical Research Program

Schedule: 20–40 hours/week, primarily Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (occasional evenings/weekends may occur)

Internship Term: June–August

Compensation: Unpaid; If you are returning to Carleton in the fall of '26, you are encouraged to apply for summer internship funding from Carleton.

The Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute (MHVI) is a comprehensive, integrated cardiovascular organization dedicated to providing exceptional patient-centered care. Our specialties include general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiovascular surgery, peripheral vascular disease, non-invasive imaging, and cardiac rehabilitation.

About the Internship Program
MHVI offers internship opportunities for qualified undergraduate and graduate students seeking meaningful, hands-on experience in clinical research, health sciences, cardiac care, health promotion, and related fields.

This internship is designed to:
• Provide professional exposure to cardiovascular clinical research.
• Expand knowledge of cardiology, clinical trial methodology, and research operations.
• Engage interns as contributing team members within an active research environment.

Responsibilities:
Interns will report to Dr. Matthew Whitbeck, Director of Research, and collaborate with the broader research team. Specific responsibilities may vary based on the student’s background and ongoing research initiatives.

Examples of internship duties include:
• Assisting in the planning and implementation of cardiovascular clinical trials.
• Conducting data entry, database maintenance, and basic data analysis/reporting.
• Performing literature reviews to support research proposals or evaluate potential trials.
• Supporting trial-related activities, documentation, and study events.

Required Qualifications:
• Enrollment in an undergraduate program (all levels welcome).|
• Strong interest in health sciences, medicine, cardiology, or clinical research.|
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work onsite at the Coon Rapids location.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Coursework in biology, anatomy, physiology, or other health-related fields.
• Experience with data entry, scientific writing, or research methodology.
• Demonstrated interest in a healthcare or research career path.

Internship Schedule and Structure:
• Flexible scheduling between 20 and 40 hours per week.
• Internship runs June through August.
• Start/end dates can be adjusted to meet academic requirements.
• Some onboarding activities (such as online training modules) may be required before or during the first two weeks.
