Peer Leader: Gender & Sexuality Center Associate, LGBTQIA+ Residential Communities

ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:

The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 12 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community, but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment. 


LGBTQIA+ Residential Communities

The Gender & Sexuality Center Associate for LGBTQIA+ Residential Communities serves to amplify involvement in and sustainability of the GSC Sponsored Houses program. This individual/team is responsible for direct maintenance and coordination of programming, house charters, community building and outreach, as well as new cycle recruitment and selection. Individuals in this position can expect to develop transferable skills around program development, recruitment techniques, community organizing, and interpersonal communication skills including conflict management and group dynamics.

Direct Report: Assistant Director 

Time Commitment *May change depending on COVID-19 procedures 
  • Gender & Sexuality Associates (GSCA’s) are expected to work 10 hours per week unless an alternative shift plan is discussed with the supervisor. GSCA hours are not scheduled during week 10. This allows for an additional hour to be logged weeks 1-9 to accommodate work loads.
  • 1 hour will be dedicated to required weekly Staff Meetings with professional staff and fellow GSCA’s.
  • 1 hour will be dedicated to weekly one-to-one meetings with GSC professional staff.
  • Remaining hours may be distributed among GSC office hours, programming, program development, etc. 
  • GSCA’s will be required to report their hours in The Hub promptly after their shifts. Students who fail to report their time in The Hub will need to complete a paper worksheet and return to the Business Office to receive payment for the respective pay period. 
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend Fall GSCA training during the week leading up to New Student Week
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend New Student Week Training prior to start of New Student Week
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend Move In Day and Opening New Student Week Events
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend select New Student Week events as well as participate in #CarlTalks series
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend Peer Leader Winter Training held within the first two weeks of Winter term 

Training 
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend Fall GSCA training during the week leading up to New Student Week
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend New Student Week Training the Monday of New Student Week
  • GSCA’s will be asked to participate in various training opportunities throughout the academic term 
  • GSCA’s may be asked to attend and/or present at regional or national conferences including MBLGTACC and/or Creating Change. The GSC will cover the cost of registration, travel, and lodging. GSCA’s will not be compensated during this time as “regular work hours”.
 
Essential Job Functions
  • Develop and implement various and relevant programming for GSC sponsored residential houses
  • Assist in the coordination and distribution of the GSC Care Kit Program for traditional halls and Interest/Identity Communities
  • Work with the Director to support the Q for Questioning program including managing intake forms, Q-Coach assignments, and assessment
  • Create and facilitate community building opportunities for house residents which are social, educational, developmental, and advocacy driven 
  • Collaborate with other Peer Leaders and identity/interest house communities to enhance available intersectional program and overall identity/interest house community engagement
  • Assist in the development and implementation of recruitment strategies for next housing cycle based on assessment data
  • Serve as a main resource in generating interest in and commitment to LGBTQIA+ campus housing initiatives
  • Co-coordinate student org/club involvement with house communities with Community Engagement and Advocacy Team 
 
Compensation/Study Abroad/Sick Leave/Resignation
  • Gender & Sexuality Center Associates will work on average 10 hours a week per term (totalling 300 hours for the academic year) at a rate of $11.50 per hour
  • GSCA’s who take a term off in a given academic year are eligible to work an additional 5 hours during the other two terms while on campus
  • GSCA’s are expected to hold only the GSCA position while employed in the GSC. Additional on-campus employment must be approved prior to the start of the academic year by the Director of the GSC
  • GSCA’s are not eligible for overtime
  • GSCA’s are expected to notify their supervisor in advance if they will be unable to cover their shift or complete assignments by a deadline
  • GSCA’s who no longer wish to hold their position within the GSC are expected to submit a notice of resignation 2 weeks prior to their last day of work. This notice should be emailed to the Director of the GSC
 
Responsible Reporting
  • All Peer Leaders are required to attend an annual Title IX training
  • All Peer Leaders are considered Responsible Employees which means, should a fellow peer disclose to them an instance of sexual misconduct, that Peer Leader is expected to report certain information via Community Concern Form to the Sexual Misconduct Prevention & Response Office. 
 
GSCA Performance Review
  • GSCA’s will be required to attend weekly or biweekly one to one meetings with their respective supervisor. These meetings will be used to check in on projects, address any performance related issues, and set goals for the following meeting. 
  • Per term, one meeting between the supervisor and GSCA will be dedicated to discuss a performance evaluation and/or performance improvement plan as necessary. This meeting will be properly documented and may be used when considering future employment as a peer leader. 
  • Performance improvement plans will often follow the process outlined below:
  1. Verbal address/reminder about expectations 
  2. Email documentation shared with GSCA, GSC Assistant Director, and GSC Director
  3. In-person meeting and completion of Performance Evaluation provided by Student Employment
  4. Possible removal from assigned projects, teams, or GSCA position
