Peer Leader: Office of Intercultural Life

ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:

The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 12 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community, but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment.


The Office of Intercultural Life strives to create a diverse and welcoming campus community that embraces individual difference, advocates for social justice, and cultivates inclusion. OIL centers the experiences of people of color while working collaboratively to create a campus wide culture of understanding and authentic living.

OIL Peer Leaders (OPLs) are student-leaders committed to OIL’s mission. As peer mentors, dialogue facilitators, and thought leaders, OPLs create a culture of inclusion at Carleton. OPLs mentor first year BIPOC students, facilitate critical conversations, and host events and workshops in the service of greater awareness, empathy, mutual respect, acceptance, and recognition.

Position Requirements: 
  • Work 10 hours per week (may not be committed to other paid positions or research positions during the academic year)
  • Work some nights and weekends
  • Attend weekly team meetings and bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with OIL staff
  • Plan to be on campus for at least Fall & Winter terms
  • Attend all OIL events and programs
  • Attend mandatory training sessions, including in-person OPL and New Student Week training in summer 2022

Duties include: 
  • Mentor a cohort of first year domestic students of color
  • Hold weekly one-on-one and bi-weekly small group meetings with mentees; support mentees in making sound decisions about their academic and social lives; refer mentees to campus resources; and support mentees in building community on campus
  • Support OIL professional staff in planning campus-wide events that support BIPOC students
  • Design, present, and facilitate candid conversations on issues affecting communities of color
  • Market and promote OIL events and issue areas by designing posters, developing social media content, and providing event photography
  • Plan and attend all OIL programming and OIL-sponsored events
  • Other tasks as assigned 

Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to OIL’s mission
  • Familiarity with campus support resources, community standards, and academic rules
  • Knowledge of and experience in group facilitation techniques
  • Knowledge of issues affecting communities of color locally, nationally, and globally
  • Ability and willingness to initiate and facilitate sensitive conversations on DEI issues
  • Experience in social media content management
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Fine attention to detail
  • Innovative thinking and the ability to be creative and flexible
  • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with team members

1.) Submit the Peer Leader Common Application ONCE. This application will apply to any Peer Leader positions that you wish to apply for. This application will be live 3/1-3/31/2022.

2.) Submit your resume and cover letter through Handshake for each position that you are applying for.

2a.) Your Cover Letter should address the following:
  1. Describe why you want to work for OIL and what makes you a strong candidate for the OPL position. 
  2. Describe how you meet one or more of the qualifications outlined above. Provide examples. Include any special skills you have that are relevant to the role.
  3. Explain what you hope to gain from being an OPL.
