Peer Leader: TRIO / Student Support Services

ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:

The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 12 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community, but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment.


TRIO/Student Support Services is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 TRIO Peer Leaders! This position includes variety, utilizes creativity, and facilitates the development of meaningful leadership and administrative skills. TRIO Peer Leaders assist with all aspects of the department, including peer mentoring of first-year TRIO students, social/cultural event planning, academic program coordination, peer tutoring and administrative tasks. A crucial aspect of the TRIO Peer Leader program is to increase the awareness of TRIO and socioeconomic class issues with the Carleton community.

Swing by TRIO, email Karina (ksierra), and/or contact any current TRIO Peer Leader! Current first-year, sophomore, and junior TRIO students interested in honing their leadership skills through mentoring and programming development are encouraged to apply.

TRIO Peer Leader Responsibilities:

  • Assist TRIO first-year students with their transition to the Carleton environment and help create a sense of community.
  • Mentor a group of 5-6 TRIO First-Years.
  • Advocate for TRIO-related socioeconomic issues at Carleton.
  • Assist in a variety of tasks, including department communication and administrative work
  • **Responsibilities subject to change depending on department needs.**
  • Develop, advertise, and facilitate Class Act events.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Attend mandatory TRIO Peer Leader training and leadership development opportunities.
  • Participate in weekly individual supervision with your TRIO Supervisor.
  • Provide and follow a consistent work schedule of 10 hours per week.

All TRIO/SSS Peer Leader applicants must:

  • Be an active TRIO/SSS participant in good academic standing (i.e., 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher).
  • Must be available to work (in-person or remote) for Fall Term 2022.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills.
  • Have a strong record of following through with TRIO requirements and attending events. 
  • One reference form completed by a faculty/staff member and/or a current or past supervisor. **At your earliest convenience, provide Karina (ksierra) with the name and email address of this individual; Karina will then send this identified person the reference form link.** 

IMPORTANT DATES/DEADLINES
  • Application deadline: March 31 – 11:59:00 p.m. CST
  • Interviews will happen on a rolling basis, with the bulk of interviews likely occurring April 2- April 18
  • Peer Leader Orientation: TBD
  • Fall Training and New Student Week Events: TBD (Usually starts the Thursday/Friday before new students move in)
  • If you are unable to make training, for any reason, and are interested in applying for the position please indicate this on your application and during your interview. 
  • Winter Peer Leader Training: TBD
  • Staff Meetings: Tuesdays during Common Time (Weekly during the term)

1.) Submit the Peer Leader Common Application ONCE. This application will apply to any Peer Leader positions that you wish to apply for. This application will be live 3/1-3/31/2022.

2.) Submit your resume and cover letter through Handshake for each position that you are applying for.

  1. Why do you believe you are a strong candidate for becoming a TRIO/SSS Peer Leader? 
  2. In your own words, what is TRIO/SSS's role at Carleton? How do TRIO/SSS Peer Leaders support those objectives?
