Carl Connection: Community Health Center Quality Assurance Intern

This opportunity is brought to us by a Carleton alum, Nara Hojvat-Gallin '92, P'20, P'23(nhojvat@nhnva.org). You are highly encouraged to reach out with any questions regarding the organization or the position prior to applying. Nara has a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.

Neighborhood Health is a community health center (a Federally Qualified Health Center) that serves Northern Virginia. We have been providing comprehensive primary health care services - medical, dental, and behavioral - to adults and children for over 25 years. Our mission is to improve health and advance health equity in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax by providing high-quality primary care regardless of ability to pay. Approximately 50% of our patients are uninsured and another 25% are on Medicaid. All are low-income. Despite having some of the wealthiest areas in the country, Northern Virginia is home to many low-income, largely immigrant communities.

Join our Quality Assurance Team for the summer. Because we are a Federally Qualified Health Center, we must report annually on certain health measures. Our Quality Assurance team develops initiatives to monitor and address areas where we want to make improvements as well as monitors the environment of care measures in our clinics.

Past Carleton intern projects have focused on colon cancer screening, prenatal care, hand hygiene, use of women's health services, and HIV/AIDS services and outreach. Internships this summer will likely focus on colon cancer screening and prenatal care.

This is a great opportunity for those interested in public health, being a health provider, and/or serving under-resourced communities. As part of the internship, we can set up informational interviews with our providers and leadership in the areas that are of interest. If the student is able to be on-site, we can arrange for opportunities to shadow our health care providers.

Internship can either be virtual, in-person, or hybrid. Minimum commitment = 8 hrs/week for the summer.

Internship Funding:
Unless you are graduating in June 2023, you are encouraged to apply for summer internship funding from Carleton.
