Sharing Our Roots Farm Ecological Restoration Internship (CCCE)

**NOTE: This is a low or unfunded opportunity. You will be eligible to apply for summer internship funding from Carleton if you will be returning to campus in the fall.

Join the team at Sharing Our Roots farm, a regenerative farm powered by emerging farmers and farmers of color. The focus for this internship position will be to support our ecological restoration programs at Sharing Our Roots farm. We seek support in 1) in-the-field restoration projects, and 2) native plant seed collection and native plant installations. This will be a year to offer volunteer projects, including native species installation, native seed collection and natural lands restoration. The Farm Ecological Restoration Intern will be supported and supervised by the Natural Lands Manager. We are flexible on your start date so you can combine this internship with working Carleton’s Reunion weekend or Lighten Up resue sale.


Job Description:

  • Execute in-the-field restoration project work under the direction of a Natural Land
  • Manager
  • Native species plant installation including trees, shrubs, plugs, and seed; erosion control device installation;mowing; or any other activities necessary in the execution of ecological restoration projects
  • Collect native plant seed and field data as an assistant on vegetation monitoring, wildlife counts, and other survey type work
  • Daily documentation and reporting of field activities
  • Participate in invasive species identification and control (cultivation and cutting mowing), native seeding and planting, prescribed burning, and brush / tree removal
  • Equipment and tool operations to conduct the above tasks may include the use of light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brush saws, ATVs / UTVs, and tractors / skid loaders with various attachments
  • Farm Event Support (As Needed)- Throughout the 2023 summer season, Sharing Our Roots will host a variety of on-farm tours and community events. The Farm Site Intern will assist the Farm Site Manager with on-the-ground setup and break down of these events (as needed). Some Saturday hours may be required.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • A current college student with an emphasis in ecology, biology, natural resource management, or related area of study
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated work ethic with ability to multitask
  • Team player who is also able to work independently and manage their own schedule
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the farm
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish, preferred, but not required)
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Hours: Flexible up to 40 hours per week, generally 8:30 am-4:30 pm Monday-Friday, some weekends and evenings for 10-12 weeks June-September 2024
