Investment/Wealth Management Summer Internship for Current Junior
Who We Are:
Tortoise is an independent investment advisor located in White Plains, New York that currently has over $1.5 billion in assets under management. We provide comprehensive financial planning and investment management advice to wealthy families and individuals across the country. Our investment philosophy emphasizes asset allocation, risk management, and a conservative, long-term approach.
Our financial advice often touches all major financial areas of our clients’ lives. We believe that it is more important to maximize the probability of having enough money rather than taking the risk necessary to strive to have the most money as our clients navigate their lifetime milestones.
Our constant dedication to putting our clients first is the foundation of our extremely strong client relationships.
Tortoise is employee-owned, and we are proud to share that three members of our ownership team started as summer interns at the firm. We are committed to providing growth opportunities for our employees and promote from within.
What You Will Do:
The 9-week, hybrid, competitively paid summer internship program provides college students an opportunity to immerse themselves in our firm and experience firsthand our collaborative culture that is built on the foundation of integrity, intellectual curiosity, and ingenuity.
What sets our program apart is that we have a planned curriculum to give you the foundational knowledge to learn how to manage investment portfolios and how to think about financial planning. From an investment management perspective, we start with the basics of equity and fixed income and progress through other aspects of investment management such as investment vehicles, tax efficiency, commodities, and options. You will read books (or excerpts of books) to cover themes such as behavioral finance, economic history, and the active vs. passive debate. From a financial planning perspective, you will learn about life insurance, trusts and estates, Social Security, Medicare, charitable giving, and more.
Throughout the summer, you will work on projects that involve addressing clients’ needs in real time. In addition, you will work on one or more capstone projects and you will present your findings to the firm. These projects are not busy-work. They help us provide clients with answers they seek.
The internship provides an understanding of the typical responsibilities associated with the entry-level Analyst role and gives a glimpse into your potential career trajectory. For this reason, our internship program is best for students who are interested in full-time employment upon graduation from college.
How to Apply:
In lieu of a cover letter, interested candidates should answer the following three questions. Please limit your response for each question to TWO sentences or less:
1. Assume that we have read your resume. If you could discuss only one thing at an interview, whether on your resume or not, what would it be, and why?
2. What was the most useful (to you) investing or non-investing book that you have read, and what was your most important personal takeaway?
3. What one thing about wealth management is most appealing to you?
Please also include a resume and a copy of your most recent undergraduate transcript.
At Tortoise, we don’t just accept difference — we celebrate it, we support it, and we thrive on it for the benefit of our employees and our community.
