Carl Connection: The Union for Contemporary Art

Overview:
The Union for Contemporary Art strengthens the cultural and social landscape of our community by using the arts as a vehicle to inspire positive social change. The Union seeks applicants from anticipated 2025 Carleton College graduates interested in working at the intersection of art and community practice. Spending one year with us at The Union, the Weitz Fellow will be introduced to all aspects of our organization, including development, operations, programming, grantmaking, and community outreach and partnerships. The Fellowship is designed to be hands-on, with opportunities to work across departments, in studios, and within the community. This position includes a specific focus on Co-Op Studios, Front Desk, & Populus Fund Support.

Schedule:
Full-time, Wednesday–Thursday; Noon- 8:00 p.m. and Friday-Saturday; 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., evenings and weekends may be required. 

Role Responsibilities:

  • A rotating schedule during which the Fellow is introduced to multiple programs and facets of a nonprofit contemporary art center including fundraising, communications, performing arts, public art partnerships, community workshops, urban gardening, exhibition, artist residency, co-op studios, and youth engagement. The length of time and level of involvement/interaction with each department will vary depending on current projects and activities.
  • Co-Op Studios Support: may include but is not limited to assisting with technical operations, assistance with cleaning and maintaining co-op studios, managing inventory, and any additional tasks as assigned by the Co-op Studios Manager.
  • Front Desk Support: The Front Desk is the central hub of communication for Co-Op Passholders, program participants, and building visitors at The Union. Our Weitz Fellow will provide a supportive role to our Visitor Services coordinators by helping staff the front desk and complete all front desk operations.
  • Populus Fund Support: Populus Fund is a regranting initiative organized by The Union, through the generous support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in order to support innovative artist projects regionally. Our Weitz Fellow will join the Populus Fund team to assist with and learn about various aspects of the regranting process.
  • Opportunities to facilitate and support neighborhood, community, and programming events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You:

  • Must be a Class of 2025 graduating senior from Carleton College.
  • Interest in many facets of contemporary art, the performing arts, youth arts education, and/or community building through the arts.
  • Passion for the intersection of art + social justice.
  • Excellent and demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to create schedules, meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Openness and passion for working with socially and economically diverse audiences.
  • Ability to proactively prioritize and juggle multiple duties and tasks.
  • Enthusiastic team player with effective and professional communication skills.
  • Natural community builder with a supportive and futuristic outlook.

Compensation:
This is a temporary, full-time position. The salary for this position is $44,000 with health, vision, and dental benefits available as needed. Fully vested automatic 3% contribution to a 401k plan. 

Professional Development:
A $1,500 stipend is available for use for professional development. It will be up to the discretion of the organization and the Fellow as to how to best use the funds.

  • Interviews will take place the week of February 24. A final decision will be made by Thursday, March 6 for a start date in September 2025.
