Curator Intern (CCCE)

Reports to: Executive Director
Employee Category: Contractor (20-40 hours/week)
Pay range: $1,000 Stipend

The Collection Intern receives general supervision from the RCHS Curator and, as needed, the Executive Director.

Job Description:
The Collections Intern position provides the candidate with an opportunity to learn and develop skills in museum collections care, preservation, management, and record keeping. This includes 3D artifacts, textiles, archival records, and digital collections. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn conservation and preservation techniques for various different materials, the proper methods and materials to use, and the background behind them.

Additionally, the candidate will work closely with the Curator to assist with collection inventory and records management. This is a key part of museum collections work. The candidate will be trained in the current collections management software and learn the best practices and standards for collections management.

Specific Curator Duties and Responsibilities:

Collections Management

  • Assist with collection inventory and records maintenance as part of an ongoing collections update
  • Ensure proper record-keeping for individual items
  • Learn the best practices and standards for museum cataloging
  • Assist with proper labeling and storing of artifacts both in storage and on exhibit

Collections Care & Preservation

  • Assist with pest management activities
  • Learn the methods of collection assessment and treatment of damage conditions
  • Assist the Curator with conservation treatments and preventative maintenance of collection items as needed
