Peer Leader: Office of Accessibility Resources (OAR)
ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:
The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 11 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment.
OAR (Office of Accessibility Resources) Peer Leader
OAR Peer Leaders mentor and support students with disabilities and other peers; promote positive disability culture through campus outreach and education; and assist with planning and implementing OAR’s programming for the campus community.
Expectations
Community Engagement
- Collaborate with fellow OAR peer leaders and staff to plan and implement programming throughout the year that supports, celebrates, and educates about people with disabilities on Carleton’s campus and beyond
- Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with other campus offices to create engaging events and ongoing initiatives that align with OAR’s mission
- Serve as a mentor in OAR’s First Year Transition program and other peer support programs
- Assist in the development and distribution of various OAR communications including posters, educational materials, social media posts, and the OAR newsletter
- Participate in New Student Week orientation events including orientation groups, Passport to Campus, and the NSW Resource Fair
Professional Development
- Attend Peer Leader training events including Spring Orientation, Fall Training, and the Peer Leader Winter Conference
- Attend weekly team meetings during the term with OAR Peer Leaders and staff as well as bi-weekly 1 on 1 meetings with your supervisor
- Engage in skill-building related to job competencies including communication, collaboration, leadership, and self-management
- Invest in personal learning and growth in knowledge and support of people with disabilities and their communities
Diversity & Inclusion
- Apply inclusion and accessibility best practices when implementing functions of the Peer Leader role such as events, mentorship, and communication
- Help create a welcoming and inclusive environment within the Office of Accessibility Resources and promote a similar environment across campus, particularly in regard to disability and accessibility
