Peer Leader: International Student Life

ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:

The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 11 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment.

Description:

International Student Life provides resources and programming for international students to help provide an equitable and successful experience at Carleton.  Our goal is to foster global citizens who excel inside and outside of the classroom and will represent Carleton around the world. International Peer Leaders help new international students and global nomads transition to life at Carleton, providing mentorship, friendship, and cultural support to a cohort of first-year students. Peer Leaders are expected to focus on strengthening our community that celebrates individual differences and inclusivity.

Required Dates to Attend: 

  • Peer Leader Orientation - 05/09/2025 - 6:30pm-8pm
  • International Peer Leader Training -09/04/2025-09/09/2025
  • Fall Peer Leader Training - TBD
  • International Student Orientation - 09/04/2025-09/09/2025
  • NSW Orientation - 09/09/2025- 09/14/2025
  • Weekly Staff Meetings - TBD during the terms
  • Biweekly Staff Check-ins - TBD based on class schedules
  • Fall Mentor/Mentee Meet & Greet - TBD in Fall 2025
  • Peer Leader Conference - TBD (typically Winter Term 1st Saturday)
  • International Festival - TBD in Spring 2026
  • Admitted Students Days Event - TBD in Spring 2026
  • All Mentor/Mentee Programs - TBD

Peer leaders will be asked to assist with additional ISL projects, including (but not limited to):

  • Any Assigned Virtual Events
  • Events added to the ISL Calendar
  • Co-sponsored events with other departments (OIL, TRIO, GSC, Dacie Moses, etc.)
  • Other ISL programming (workshops, social/education events, etc.)
  • Monthly cultural events and celebrations (TBD)
  • Other professional & student development opportunities

Duties include:  

Community & Belonging

  • Recognize, accept, and demonstrate a personal commitment to each mentee
  • Help first-year students navigate cultural adjustment to the U.S. and provide access to resources that will help them throughout their time at Carleton
  • Act as a resource for mentees regarding academics, health, and social life at Carleton
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of all people by working effectively with students of different racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds
  • Help facilitate sessions and activities during International Student Orientation
  • Arrange programs that celebrate different cultures and special occasions. Work with student organizations to avoid overlap, but engage new students.
  • Demonstrate effective cross-cultural communication

Administrative Tasks

  • Create and facilitate programming that is inclusive and welcoming to the entire international community
  • Show up for all required International Life events, including team meetings, workshops, training sessions, office hours, etc.
  • Communicate ideas and issues to International Student Life staff
  • Depending on the caseload of students, additional hours can be fulfilled with shifts at the ISL office

Professional Development

  • Actively participate in Peer Leader training to build connections with other offices
  • Role model active participation in International Student Life events and activities
  • Returning Peer Leaders will actively facilitate during the Peer Leader Winter Conference

The ideal candidate is interested in international affairs, has experience creating programs, and can work 6-10 hours per week during the term. Candidates on campus during Fall and Winter terms will be given priority.

  1. Why are you interested in working for the International Life Office and what makes you a good candidate for the peer leader position?
  2. What would you hope to gain from the experience working as a peer mentor?
  3. How would you see yourself advocating for international students at Carleton?

Perks of the Job: 

Students who work as Peer Leaders are given the opportunity to receive priority hiring during winter and spring breaks (depending on the department's budget and needs).
