Peer Leader: Sustainability Assistant (STA)
ABOUT THE PEER LEADER PROGRAM:
The Peer Leader Program serves to synthesize the work of these 11 offices into one developmental experience for students’ current and prospective aspirations. These roles not only allow students the platform to work with staff to create programming, resources, and peer support for the campus community, but also offer students opportunities to think critically about and commit diligently to their own development and skill attainment.
Sustainability Assistant
Interested in getting paid to promote sustainability and environmental justice on campus? Apply to be a Carleton College Sustainability Assistant (STA)! Sustainability Assistants (STAs) help to carry out campus-wide sustainability initiatives and serve as a resource for students, faculty, and staff. STAs report to Carleton’s Director of Sustainability. Each STA generally focuses on 1-2 areas of expertise, but all STAs are expected to assist with major events such as Climate Action and Earth Week planning efforts. Active teams currently include: food systems & emissions, energy and operations, climate resilience and water, zero waste, and communication and engagement.
We build sustainability literacy and support cultural and structural change at Carleton and with the surrounding community.

Hours: Full-time, 10 hours per week

Job Responsibilities
- STA job responsibilities can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Supporting projects and programming that advance our sustainability goals related to food, zero waste, transportation, energy, and environmental justice and collaborating with the Northfield and surrounding community to advance climate action.
- Must attend weekly STA office meetings.
- Create posters, signage, etc. or host workshops for educational purposes.
- Manage the sustainability website, Instagram, and contribute to the sustainability blog.
- Serve as liaisons to related groups or programs such as the Center of Civic and Community Engagement (CCCE), Res Life, ECO, IFSA, Energy Club, Sunrise Carleton, academic departments, and programs such as ENTS and students advancing equity or environmental action).
- Work with Carleton's food service provider and Facilities Department to advance ongoing needs in zero waste programming.
- Assist staff with internal data management and external campus sustainability reporting and recognition.
- Other projects/research as identified from our institutional sustainability priorities in Carleton 2033 and the Sustainable Futures Framework, our guide to climate action and sustainability, the Director of Sustainability, Campus Energy Manager, the Sustainability Program Coordinator, and STA advisers.
Qualifications
- STA candidates are motivated by the opportunity to shape and grow the STA program. While experience is not required, we appreciate those who will take initiative as projects get rolling.
- Preferred students will have motivation and passion for environmental and social justice issues as well as the ability to time manage the work required in the office with their academic lives.
- Qualified candidates are not necessarily those with the most sustainability experience or associations. We welcome diverse expertise relevant to addressing challenges.
- Through prior involvement in Carleton student groups or high school experience (not necessarily related to the environment), they will have an interest in planning and implementing unique and creative programs and ideas. Projects can be individually or team-designed.
- College coursework or past internship experience related to sustainability initiatives should be noted in the application but is not required. We are looking for STAs with diverse interests in areas such as food, advocacy, procurement, outreach, education, event planning, graphic design, data analysis, communication, project management, and community organizing.
